Sometimes helping your baby to get to sleep is a difficult task, and there are a multitude of possible reasons why your baby won’s sleep.
The reasons could vary, anything from colic to simply being overly stimulated. It’s a frustrating situation regardless of the reason. Just remember that you aren’t the only parents experiencing this difficulty.
Giving your baby a warm, comfortable bath with soft lighting, and gently massaging them with baby oil will encourage them to relax and settle down for sleep.
It’s important to consider the reasons that a baby won’t sleep. One commonly overlooked issue is when the baby is over dressed. Anyone, no matter what their age, can find it difficult to sleep when they are over dressed, and babies are no exception. Make certain that your baby is dressed appropriately for the current temperature; dress her just as you would dress yourself in those conditions. A nice, comfortable temperature for the baby’s room is around 70 degrees.
Another possibility why your baby won’t sleep is that something is irritating them. They just can’t say “hey this sleeper itches,” or “I need a diaper change,” but crying is a way they will definitely let you know.
Your baby’s clothing could be a potential irritant. It’s possible that you need to try a different detergent.
Teething is another reason why your baby could be having sleeping problems. This may begin to start about three months or so. If this is the case, a good idea before trying anything on your own is to take her in and ask the doctor for a recommendation.
Since babies are soothed by repetitive sounds, playing some soft, lulling music might be a possible solution. Nature sounds, such as rain or ocean waves, are a few such examples. Another idea might be to record yourself as you’re reading a bedtime story and setting it to play continuously. Gentle, repetitive sounds like these help to relax and soothe your baby.
Sometimes the simplest reasons are overlooked. Maybe your baby won’t sleep is because he or she isn’t tired. Rocking them gently or walking them around can be an enormous help to tire them out. Some parents find that a surefire solution is putting the baby into the car and driving around for a little while. The reason driving in a car is so effective is that the motor’s gentle vibrations along with the motion of driving lulls the baby to sleep.
